MEETING
Brian Duignan
Why did you begin? I am a naturally creative person, but it fell by the wayside until Covid 19 lockdown. It was then I realised how important is is for me to create – draw, paint, make, colour etc.
What made you decide to pursue your
craft? Support & encouragement from friends, family & the online community.

What challenges did you overcome/ face
daily? Juggling my day job, family life, creating, technology (including social media). Not being a Gailegoir and learning that Iora or Madra Crainn (literally “tree dog”) is a squirrel.
What keeps you going when they
become heavy going? What gets in the way becomes the way – doing a little of something is better than doing a lot of nothing.

What inspired your creation (the one
you sent us to showcase)? Inspiration from my boys asking questions on our walks, and wanting to know the names of the creatures we see in Irish and the stories attached to them. Along with my passion for Irish history & folklore.
What advice would you give to your
younger self starting out? There has never been, nor will there ever be, another like you. Therefore make visible what, without you, perhaps never have been seen.
What advice would you give to anyone
who is scared to start making art? Failure is guaranteed if you don’t begin. Don’t aim for perfection, but for improvement. At the end of the day, create for you.

How do you tackle the initial financial
difficulties that come with choosing the
path of an artist/creator? Luckily, I have a day job, which helps along with a supportive family.
